Black Youth in Tech
It’s Black History Month and we didn’t just want to highlight the past but also take a peek into the future of technology! In an ever-evolving digital and technological space, Black youth are looking for valuable opportunities to put their technical skills to use.
Digital Additive wants to feature organizations that are making great strides to ensure tech education and experience is readily accessible, especially in lower-income communities, and we found some wonderful organizations that are dedicated to offering these experiences.

Shawn Woodall of Atlanta, Georgia is the founder of Code Elephant, a technology education company dedicated to helping kids build their problem solving and critical thinking skills through computer programming. Shawn teaches coding sessions year-round for kids age 7 to 12 years old. The classes range from elementary to intermediate level concepts and are taught for 6 weeks.

InTech is a technology camp that specializes in setting girls up for success in their future endeavors. The InTech Academy program is tailored to girls who are seeking hands-on experience in game development, app development, and user experience design. The 9-week program offers professional development workshops as well as opportunities for paid internships. Past members of the program have shared how their experience with InTech encouraged them to major in computer science with aspirations of working for big tech companies like Google and Facebook!
Last but certainly not least, Dream Hustle Code is a program that was co-founded by then 16-year-old Ian Michael Brock (which is very impressive). Brock got his inspiration to start Dream Hustle Code from a video that featured Chris Bosh speaking about his experience with technology and code. You can check the video out below!
This is a prime example of why representation matters! Seeing people that look like you in spaces that have previously been inaccessible can make all the difference. To learn more about Dream Hustle Code and some of their cool upcoming events (like touring Silicon Valley) click here!
